Goodnight Mommy, despite being very straightforward, is actually really difficult to review for a few reasons. The movie is enjoyable through most of it and the cinematography is great. The storyline remains mysterious and intriguing through most of it as well but I can’t help but feel like it uses a huge all too familiar horror tropes in regards to the ending.
Back when M. Night Shashlamabam made The Sixth Sense, there were many horror directors chasing the big twist, which can either make or break a movie for me. In this instance I have to say that it somewhat ruined it for me. I don’t want to say the ending was completely ripped off of anything in particular, it just felt too familiar.
Now you might very well love this and end up thinking “woahhh doood that shit was crazyyy” and if that’s the case then fuck yeah. For me the ending was sort of met with an “alright”. I didn’t hate it but I didn’t love it. A big part of what ruined it for me was that the directors didn’t even trust the audience to put together what was going on through any creative means. Instead, in the final moments we have the mother blurt out something along the lines of, “this is what’s really going on in this movie!”.
Actually fuck this movie, it’s bad.
