(2016) I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House

This another really tough review because I don’t believe the film is as bad as people make it out to be, but I also think it fundamentally didn’t work on a few levels.

First off, it’s boring. It feels like a great 20 minute short film stretched out to be a feature.

Actually, you know what? This isn’t a good movie and here’s why. While it approaches a ghost story with an incredibly delicate touch, there’s also moments that are totally conventional and pull you out of that unique space.

I don’t mind an ambiguous horror film from time to time, especially one that’s fueled by a great atmosphere, which this film had. It was just overkill in this instance, literally nothing happens, there’s no payoff. And my god, they make you suffer through these incredibly pretentious dialogues that completely ruin the seemingly ambitious narrative that Oz Perkins was using.

All in all, I’d say pass on this one. I think there’s elements that hold some merit but ultimately it wasn’t very successful.

4.5/10
