(1955) Day the World Ended

This movie is pretty solid up until the full monster/mutant reveal which is hilariously silly. I mean, I absolutely love it but at the same time, it’s so…so bad.

The story itself is that kind of early, shlocky nuclear exploitation but really so fictitious that calling it anĀ “exploitation” is a stretch.

It was a fun movie but very Roger Corman. I don’t mean that in a bad way, he’s a great filmmaker but also a prolific b-horror filmmaker.

(2016) Holidays

I’m not going to break this down by segment but I’ll just say that overall, I felt it to be entertaining, simply by format, but quality wise, a disappointment. Humor is pretty much layered throughout every segment, which is fine but there were some actually creepy moments that I would have loved to see sustained or explored more.

I think Kevin Smith’s segment, while arguably the shittiest, was the most realized and entertaining of the bunch. The biggest disappointment was Father’s Day, which was so fucking good up until the last minute, which made little sense and seemed like a vapid afterthought.

Overall, it’s filled with a bunch of short and sweet segments that, even if differing in quality, don’t linger too long before diving into the next story. I’d recommend it, cautiously.

(2019) Happy Death Day 2U

I was so surprised at how much I liked Happy Death DayĀ when it was initially released that I felt obligated to see the sequel. Honestly dude, it’s the same fucking thing, sort of, in a good way.

The story is even sillier this time but they intentionally play up the hamminess of it all and once again, Jessica Rothe just makes the entire movie.

I’m sold on this girl, I’ll watch anything she’s in.

(2019) I Am Mother

I Am Mother is an incredible sci-fi horror film that while borrowing from previous successes, manages to add a whole new human element that makes it unique.

I thought Clara Rugaard did a great job. My initial thoughts were that the role didn’t require much but the subtleness of her role arguably required a greater effort than a traditional dramatic role.

I really loved it and I don’t want to pigeon-hole this general idea to one film. I think that [said film] paved the way for this in a minimalistic atmosphere but I Am Mother explored it in a much more complex and arguably realistic sense.

(2019) Child’s Play

I don’t really care that this film was remade and I was actually excited to see it in a new light. With that being said though, the original is a competent film and this project didn’t really add much.

It was entertaining and I did enjoy Mark Hamill voicing Chucky. Plaza was…eh, the usual. I’m not saying she can’t be great, I just find she’s also perfectly okay with average.

There was admittedly a ceiling on how much I think I could enjoy a remake of this film and I feel like this one came close to it, in a good way. They captured that balanced vibe of humor and creepiness pretty well.

(1997) The Relic

This is a totally cool movie with some great sequences and an interesting premise. However, it suffers from what a lot of major studio horror movies did in the 90’s. A lot of the CGI doesn’t age well, the dialogue can be corny and any forensic based science is totally unrealistic, even when not simply just outdated.

Just watch it, it’s sort of long but fun. I didn’t have high expectations and as long as you don’t either, it’s pretty damn enjoyable. I think the pacing could have been improved significantly but it is what it is.

(2009) Zombieland

This is an incredible zombie film and despite feeling like a time-capsule of 2009, the core components still hold up really well. It’s a short, sweet, easily digestible and simply, fun to watch.

I love all four main characters but the dynamic between Eisenberg and Woody was my favorite. Woody in particular is fucking hilarious and oftentimes I felt as if his energy actually was actually the backbone of the entire film.

Zombieland has the perfect ratio of comedy, drama and horror. Despite some glitchy CGI moments here and there and a few lines of cheesy dialogue, this film is wonderful.

8/10

(1932) White Zombie

This is a film that’s aesthetically great with a potentially interesting premise, however, the story in actual execution, leaves a ton to be desired.

It’s definitely important in horror history for the early use of zombies and also, just a non-traditional use of them in general.

Bela is obviously wonderful, as always and for that reason alone I can recommend this film. It’s a bit rough in portions due to age and basically, at least I imagine, damage to the original physical film.

6/10

(2018) The Perfection

I found this film to be a bit of a fucking mess and despite a particularly strong first leg, it never really amounted to anything. It’s far from complete shit, with exceptional production and competent acting, but it also doesn’t stand out to me after finishing it.

I think Allison Williams is just alright, not just in this movie but in general.
